Kilmarnock to Troon Railroad - the Kilmarnock and Troon Railroad has claim to be the first steam passenger railway in the world. A plateway wagon road using horse power opened in 1812. Passenger services were introduced soon after, and in 1816 a steam locomotive began operation. The most important site on the line of the old Railroad is Laigh Milton Viaduct.

Laigh Milton Viaduct - the Viaduct, which has recently been restored, is the oldest railway viaduct in Scotland, and has world-wide industrial archaeological significance.

Locomotive manufacture - the Victorian locomotive building industry founded by Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock produced engines which were used throughout the world. The successor firm of Hunslet Barclay is still manufacturing and renovating railway rolling stock in the same location.

Scottish Industrial Railway Museum - the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Trust is developing the museum at the former Minnivey colliery near Dalmellington. Steam trains are operated on some weekends during the summer.
