LADY FLORA HASTINGS (1806 - 1839)
Lady Flora was one of the daughters of Loudoun Castle and
a lady in waiting at the court of the young Queen Victoria.
Although she was the innocent victim of illness, spiteful
gossip circulated at the court, which led to eggs being thrown at the
Queen's coach. The affair was badly damaging to Victoria's popularity
in the early days of her reign.
Lady Flora's grave and monument are in Loudoun Old Parish
Kirk near Galston. She is also commemorated by Lady Flora's Institute
in Newmilns, which is now a housing complex for elderly people.
