From the south
  • follow the A76 to Dumfries, and from there choose between continuing on the A76 up the Nith Valley to Cumnock, Mauchline and Kilmarnock; or the A713 tourist route through Galloway to the Doon Valley
  • follow the A70 to Muirkirk, Cumnock and Mauchline
  • follow the A71 to the Irvine Valley and Kilmarnock
From the north

  • follow the M77/A77 to Kilmarnock

...by Rail
The rail route from Carlisle to Glasgow Central via Dumfries stops at the East Ayrshire stations of New Cumnock, Auchinleck, Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs, Stewarton and Dunlop. (In the summer this train provides through travel from Newcastle on Tyne to Glasgow Central. In the winter this journey requires a change at Carlisle).

...by Air
There are regular Ryanair flights into Glasgow Prestwick Airport, 10 miles from Kilmarnock, from London Stansted, Paris Beauvais, Frankfurt Hahn, Brussels Charleroi and Oslo. From Glasgow Prestwick there is quick, easy bus, train and road transport into East Ayrshire.
