HISTORY & HERITAGE

Castles and Historic Buildings

There are hundreds of attractive and interesting historic buildings in East Ayrshire. A few examples are listed below:

Dunlop - Main Street and churchyard with Hans Hamilton's Tomb and Clandeboye School [both 17th century.]

Fenwick - Laigh Fenwick and the Parish Church.

Kilmaurs - the Jougs or tollbooth.

Kilmarnock - The Cross marks the old centre of the town and today contains a statue commemorating the printing of the first edition of Robert Burns' poems near the site. Nearby are the old Laigh Kirk and Bank Street areas and John Finnie Street which contains one of the finest collections of Victorian buildings to be seen in Scotland.

Loudoun Old Parish Kirk.

Newmilns - Keep - the nearby Kirkyard and the Old Town House

Stair - a cluster of buildings near the bridge, and Stair bridge itself.

Mauchline - The centre of the town contains many charming buildings which were known to Robert Burns. Some of his children and acquaintances are buried in the churchyard.

Cumnock - The Square, containing the Old Church and the Mercat Cross, with the nearby Baird Institute.

Ochiltree - Main Street.
