CHANGING A NAME

In this section you will find answers to all the questions you may ask when wanting to change a name.

Q - I would like to change my name? Can I?
A
- Yes. In Scotland any man or woman is free to change his or her name if they want to.

Q - Can I then change my name legally on my Birth Certificate?
A
- Yes. The law in Scotland allows anyone who wishes to change their forename or surname officially to do so. Once changed your birth certificate will show BOTH your old and new names.

Q - Where do I apply for a change of name?
A
- You can get an application form in any Registrar's Office in Scotland. Completed applications should be sent to:

Change of Name Unit
General Register Office
New Register House
Edinburgh

You should also send £36.00 for recording the change of name, if more than one person in the same family is applying for a change of name, at the same time, then each subsequent application is £10.00.

Q - Do I need my parents’ permission?
A
- No. You don't need your parent's permission if you are over the age of 16. If you are under the age of 16, you do need your parents permission. The parent or guardian must then make an application.
