Real Nappies

How to Care For Real Nappies

Caring for Real Nappies – Isn’t it Hard Work?

Not at all. Real nappies don’t need to be sluiced, boiled or soaked – they can simply be washed along with other whites in your washing machine at home.

 Washing

Before using for the first time, wash your nappies. This will make them more absorbent by fluffing up the fibres. Nappy covers (wraps) do not require pre-washing.

A 60 degree Centigrade wash is recommended when washing your nappies.

A hotter wash may reduce the life of the nappy. The wraps can be washed up to 60 degrees Centigrade with the nappies or can be washed in a cooler wash (40 degrees Centigrade) with a usual clothes wash. To prevent catching and snagging, close the Velcro tabs on the wraps and nappies. Use a non biological detergent if possible, as it is kinder on the skin, and do not use a fabric conditioner as they will decrease the absorbency of the nappy.

Is pre soaking necessary?

No it’s not. You can choose to soak your nappies, if you prefer, but equally nappies can be stored in a bucket without water until you are ready to wash.

Soaking can make stain removal easier, but remember to change the water daily to prevent any smells. A few drops of lavender or tea tree oil, or a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate or 2 or 3 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar will also help to keep your bucket smelling fresh.

Drying

The easiest, cheapest and most environmentally friendly way to dry your nappies is to line dry them. Sunshine will deodorise, sanitise and naturally bleach your nappies. However, drying outside is not always possible. Drying on a clothes airer, over a radiator or tumble drying are all options for you to consider.

Top tip – if tumble drying, placing a clean dry towel in with your nappies will reduce the time it takes to dry them as it will absorb some of the condensation.

It is not recommended to either tumble dry or place wraps on a radiator to dry.

Laundry Services

If you are interested in real nappies, but feel that home laundering is not for you, then subscribing to a real nappy laundering service could provide the perfect solution. The Scottish Nappy Company, based in Dundonald, provides a laundry and delivery service for parents. Once a week, they collect the full bag of used nappies from your doorstep, and deliver the coming week’s supply of fresh nappies.

The cost of using this service is equivalent to the cost of using leading brand disposables.
