Material Recovery Facility

A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has been built at the former cleansing depot at Western Road Kilmarnock and now has the capability of sorting and storing cans, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard from domestic, industrial and commercial premises.

The MRF system has been fitted with appropriate equipment capable of processing up to 8000 tonnes of co-mingled waste per annum and can be added to easily as technology progresses.

MRF staff help the process by removing any contaminants from the paper and cardboard recycling bin, this is then baled and transported to re-processors throughout the UK .

The garden material that is collected through the Brown Garden Bin does not go to the MRF. It is taken straight to the re-processor where it is composted and used for a variety of uses.
