TOP Play/TOP Sport
East Ayrshire Council secured £65,000 from the Sportscotland Lottery
fund in January 2001 to implement the above programme within our area.
We were amongst the first local authorities in Scotland to implement TOPS
which is a Youth Sport Trust initiative administered in Scotland via the
national agency for sport, Sportscotland. The Programme is aimed at children
aged 5 - 12 years (TOP Play: Primary 1 - 4, TOP Sport: Primary 4 - 7)
and must be incorporated into both Primary School Physical Education time
and Community Sports Activities.
The funding package from Sportscotland is intended to cover the following
costs:

Training
is of 4 hours duration and will be offered as a combined unit incorporating
TOP Play and TOP Sport. |
The TOPS Programme must spend one full term in a primary school prior
to it being introduced to a community setting within the catchment area
of that school. Therefore the implementation of TOPS in the Community
will be a phased process commencing in October 2001 and running over the
next 3 - 4 years.
To date, six of East Ayrshire's nine Learning Partnerships (Auchinleck,
Loudoun, Kilmarnock, Cumnock, Stewarton and St Joseph's) have undergone
TOPS training and are now able to implement the programme within their
primary schools.
In addition, Leisure Development Services are now looking to implement
the programme within the wider community, for example to local youth clubs,
brownies, etc. Anyone who is involved with such a group and would like
further information about the benefits of the TOPS Programme should contact
the Sports
Development Manager.
Primary School Sportshall Athletics Championships
The Primary School Sportshall Athletics Championships is organised
annually by Leisure Development and supported by Educational and Social
Services Department, Community Planning Partnership and the Kilmarnock
Harriers. Sportshall athletics is intended as a fun introduction to the
sport for primary school aged children. It makes use of specially modified
equipment such as the foam javelin, mini-hurdles, speed-bounces and tunnels.
For the first time, Dunlop Primary School were crowned champions of
2008 ’s Primary School Sportshall Athletics Final.
Since April this year, primary schools have been competing in local athletics
heats with the top 4 schools going on to compete in the grand final. Over
500 of East Ayrshire’s primary school children participated in the
event and enjoyed the exciting races and challenges using specially modified
equipment such as the foam javelin, mini-hurdles, speed-bounces and bendy
tunnels.
This year’s Championships were run for Primary 5 pupils and this
has proven to be very successful in offering a fun introduction to the
sport this age group.
The grand final of the event was held at the Galleon Centre, Kilmarnock
on the evening of 4 June 2008 and was attended by more than 200 supporters
from all 4 teams. Following a hotly contested event, this year’s
Championship was eventually won by Dunlop Primary School. All results
are listed below:
1st place: Dunlop Primary School, Dunlop
2nd place: Greenmill Primary School, Cumnock
3rd place: Lainshaw Primary School, Stewarton
4th place: Dalmellington Primary School, Dalmellington
All of the participants received medals at the end of the event and as
always each finalist school will also receive a mini athletics kit which
will help them continue to develop the sport in years to come.
Community Wellbeing Spokesperson, Councillor Kathy Morrice commented “It
was a fantastic evening which had us on the edge of our seats with excitement.
Congratulations to Dunlop for winning the event and well done to the New
Sporting Futures team and their partners for running the event and all
their hard work”.
Community Wellbeing Spokesperson, Councillor John MacKay said “It
was great to see so many parents and supporters coming along to the final
to encourage the children taking part. Hopefully we will see some of these
young stars in the future at the 2014 Commonwealth Games”.
