RUBY'S AYRSHIRE HOSPICE RUN AND FAMILY FUN DAY - SUNDAY 8 JUNE 2008

Why is it called Ruby's Race?

Ruby's Race started when Ruby Young, who was a Kilmarnock Harrier, tragically died from cancer. Every year, East Ayrshire Council's Leisure Development Services, in conjunction with Kilmarnock Harriers, run this event to raise money for the Ayrshire Hospice with every penny going to the charity including your entry money! The event is held every year in the Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock on the second Sunday in June. To view a video clip of the race and fun day click here

5K Ladies Race

This 5K race (3.1 miles) starts in front of the castle and follows a trail around the Dean Castle Country Park and is marshalled by the Kilmarnock Harriers. Although this is called a race because a lot of serious athletes take part, fun runners and walkers are more than welcome to take part as well.

The ladies race starts at 11am with registration from 9.30am.

One Mile Charity Walk

The one mile walk also starts in front of the Castle and follows a trail around the Castle grounds. This has proved a popular event for adults, children and animals. All walkers who take part will receive a medal.

The walk starts at 1pm and costs £2 per child, £3 per adult and £5 per family of four. Entry on the day.

Family Fun Day

This is a fantastic day out for the whole family. Activities on the day have included face painting, badge making, sports obstacle races, fitness testing, inflatable pirate ship, velcro olympics and the snappy crocodile. You can have your photograph taken with Scott the horse and visit the children's corner.

The fun day starts at 11am and there are charges for some activities but all proceeds go to the Ayrshire Hospice!

The event has previously been sponsored by McSherry Halliday Solicitors and Notaries, ASDA, JH Donald, Greggs the Bakers, The Purple Turtle, New Look, Woolworths, Diageo, Tom Telfer, Brownings the Bakers, Adams Childrenswear, Lloyds TSB Scotland, ODEON Cinema, Superdrug, TK Maxx and the Trophy Centre.
