C.A.T.C.H. PROJECT - WALKING DEVELOPMENT

The long term aim of this project is to initiate walking programmes with the aim of reducing coronary heart disease and stroke and increase activity as part of daily life.

Walking Tips

  • Wear sun protection even on cloudy days
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses on very bright warm days
  • Loose cotton clothes will stop you from overheating
  • Always carry some water with you
  • If you feel very tired find a shady spot to rest
  • Wear lighter-weight shoes and cotton socks. Sandals are not ideal as you may damage your feet going over rougher paths
  • Walk with friends
  • Take your children
  • Walk the dog

Volunteers Wanted

We are always looking for keen volunteer walk leaders for all areas as the number of walks and walkers are increasing. So, if you have an hour or two a week to spare then talk to us about volunteering. You will meet a lot of new people, feel much fitter and walk places you didn't know existed. It's very rewarding helping other people get out and about and increasing their confidence and fitness (as well as your own!). We will give you full training, an outdoor jacket, bag, volunteer t-shirt and support. Interested... please contact the Walking Development Manager.

Great Wee Scottish Walks

CATCH the Walking Bug is taking part in the Great Scottish Wee Walk in Galston on the 3 August. 2008 is the introduction of an eighth walk at Galston in the Irvine Valley and is for all children and young people under 16 years old and families to participate as possible (younger children are welcome to bring their parent, older siblings or guardian with them along the routes). Walkers can choose to start the two mile walks at 1100, 1200, 1300 or 1400. Upon completion of the walks all entrants receive a goody bag and medal for their efforts.

Activities available during the Wee Walk event includes a toddler stroll for the tiny tots which takes part over a shorter distance and a teddy bear hunt in conjunction with charity Enlighten – Tackling Epilepsy. Charity Mascots are also invited to attend the events and take part in mascot races with the children.
