Go back to Map

Lugar is a pleasant village of well maintained houses and trim gardens, and stands on the north bank of the river Lugar, which, together with its tributaries, offers some sport to the angler. The village has a population of 211.

Nearby are Bello Mill and Murdoch's Cave. William Murdoch, born in 1754 at Bello Mill, was the first maker of a model locomotive in this country and he was also the inventor of many steam engine parts. He is most famous for developing the use of gas lighting and the "laboratory" where he carried out his experiments on lighting by coal gas was a cave near Bello Mill - Murdoch's Cave.
