Lugar is a pleasant village
of well maintained houses and trim gardens, and stands on the north bank
of the river Lugar, which, together with its tributaries, offers some
sport to the angler. The village has a population of 211.
Nearby are Bello Mill and Murdoch's
Cave. William Murdoch, born in 1754 at Bello Mill, was the first maker
of a model locomotive in this country and he was also the inventor of
many steam engine parts. He is most famous for developing the use of gas
lighting and the "laboratory" where he carried out his experiments
on lighting by coal gas was a cave near Bello Mill - Murdoch's Cave.
