Kilmaurs, 2 miles north of
Kilmarnock, boasts a church dating from 1170 and received its charter
as a burgh of barony in 1527. The chief industry in the 19th
and early 20th centuries was hosiery, but there were also coalmines
in the neighbourhood.
Since the 1960’s the village
expanded as a dormitory suburb of Kilmarnock, though many people now also
commute to Glasgow. It has a population of 2,764.
