Crosshouse village has a popultation
of 2435 and is less than 1 mile distant from Kilmarnock, originally built
for the workers in the many coal mines in the early 19 century, it was
part of Kilmaurs Parish until 1882.
Today it is the home to Crosshouse Hospital, a major
employer in Ayrshire and built to replace the old Kilmarnock Infirmary,
and received it's first in-patient in August 1982.
Early education was at two schools, Crossshouse school
sited at the Cross until demolished in the 1990's and St. Pauls
RC School which was in Knockentiber a village between Kilmaurs and Crosshouse
it closed circa 1946.
Andrew Fisher Prime Minister of Australia for three
terms between 1908 and 1915, was born here on 29th August 1862, son of
a coalminer. There is a cairn mounted in the village to his memory.
Also there are strong claims that Sir William Wallace
was born at Ellerslie near Crosshouse.
