OUR AREA

Crookedholm

Crookedholm lies 2 miles (3 km) east of Kilmarnock, at the junction of the River Irvine with the old road to Hurlford. It is very appropriately named as the River Irvine sweeps round in a series of loops, forming an irregular area of flat "holm" land with the ground rising in a steep slope behind on the north bank.

In 1991 the population of Crookedholm was 969 but now it is 835. It is seen as a separate village but it shares much with Hurlford. It contains both of Hurlford's churches and its bowling green. Most of Crookedholm's residents travel out of the area for work although previously the nearby Wellington Colliery provided the main employment.
