Scottish Parliament
The elections on the 6th May 1999 saw Scotlands first
parliament in almost 300 years being elected. The first meeting was held
on the 12th May and the Queen officially opened it on the 1st
of July. The Parliament contains 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament
(MSPs) 73 Constituency MSPs and 56 List MSPs. The Parliament aims to put
a truly democratic system of government in place that will serve the people
of Scotland in the 21st century.

One of the Scottish Parliament's aims is to establish Scottish Parliament
Information Centres (SPICe) through partner libraries in each of
the Parliamentary Constituencies. In East Ayrshire these are located in
- The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock
- Cumnock Community Library, Cumnock
The centres aim to provide the public with free and open access to the
workings of the Parliament.
