Life-Long Learning - Information Technology

Computer Based Training (CBT)

There are a number of opportunities to learn to use computers and software packages in East Ayrshire Libraries. The material is free to use in any East Ayrshire Library. CBT packages are either on CD-ROM or workbooks.

There are workbooks available on learning to use the Internet as well as software packages such as Access, Excel and Word.

BBC WEBWISE (CD-ROM)

This is a FREE introduction to the Internet that covers the basics such as sending e-mails and searching the web.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS (CD-ROM)

This is a FREE interactive course from the IT for All initiative. Aimed at beginners and those that are looking to increase their confidence this takes users through a series of exercises. Starting with the basics - an introduction to the mouse, computer and keyboard - is ideal for a beginner. However if you are more confident there are sections on the desktop, word processing and the Internet.

SCOTTISH LEARNING NETWORK   (CD-ROM & workbooks)

The Scottish Learning Network (SLN) was funded by Scottish Enterprise and comprises of a series of CD-ROMs that you work through on your own. You do not need to do all of them but can pick which areas you wish to do. The discs cover Using Personal Computers, Windows 95 (basic & intermediate), Windows 97 (basic & intermediate) and Using the Internet (basic & intermediate) and the work books complement the discs. Use of SLN courseware is FREE.

SLN courseware is available at the Dick Institute, Galston Community Library & Stewarton Community Library.

EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE (ECDL) (CD-ROM & workbooks)

This is a European-wide qualification that enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills. It covers the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and its use in the workplace and society in general. It is broken down into 7 modules - basic IT concepts, using the computer & managing files, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation and information & communication (Internet & e-mail).

ECDL training packs are available and testing will soon be available. For more details on ECDL in libraries contact the Information Officer.
