Neighbourhood Services

LIBRARY, REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION SERVICES

Registration Service

The Registration Service allows two types of searches to be made in the registers it holds, and both searches require a statutory fee to be charged to the researcher. These fees are set by the Registrar General for Scotland and must be charged by every Registrar in Scotland.

A Particular Search is for a period of 5 years or part thereof in the indexes of the Register and incurs a costs whether an entry is found or not. If the entry is found, the researcher may take pencil notes from only that entry.

A General Search allows the researcher (with the assistance of the Registrar) to search the Indexes, examine any relevant entry and to take pencil notes, and incurs a costs per hour. The Registrar must remain with the researcher during both types of searches to ensure that confidentiality is maintained and that the registers are not damaged in any way. It would be necessary for the researcher to make an appointment with the Registrar to conduct a general search.

Telephone enquiries - If a researcher contacts a Registrar to see if an entry is held in that office, the Registrar will check that they hold the appropriate entry and will confirm whether or not they have the entry. The Registrar will also explain the appropriate fees for examining or purchasing a copy of the entry. The Registrar will never provide any information over the telephone or in person to a researcher without obtaining the appropriate statutory fee first.

For Further Information please contact Mrs Catherine Dunlop, Senior Registrar on 01563 576692 or E-mail cathy.dunlop@east-ayrshire.gov.uk
