POLLUTION CONTROL

This section of the Environmental Health Service is responsible for a large range of services which are listed below.

The Pollution Control team consists of a Team Leader who has a staff of 2 Environmental Health Officers and 2 Technicians. They are also responsible for the Pest Control and Dog Warden Services.

Housing

Matters concerning housing and their associated defects or problems fall within the scope of the Housing (Scotland) Act 1987. This act lists what is known as the 'Tolerable Standard', whichPicture: Housing defines the minimum standard required to make a house habitable. The Pollution Control Team are responsible for identifying possible problems by means of housing surveys, and responding to complaints, predominantly from private sector rented properties, and taking action where necessary.

Where houses are found to be in a state of disrepair or fail to meat the Tolerable Standard, there are a range of possible options for action, such as the threat of formal action, service of notice requiring the implementation of repair or improvement works, or even the imposition of a Closing or Demolition order on the property to prohibit its occupation.

In some specific circumstances grant assistance towards the cost of improvement works may be available. Any enquiries in this regard should be directed to the Councils Housing and Technical Services Department.
