The law is there to protect the public from workplace dangers. Health
and safety at work is very important, so there are rules which require
all of us not to put ourselves or others in danger.

Does health and safety law apply
to me?
Yes, to all firms, however small; also the self-employed and to employees.

Who enforces health and safety
in my business?
Either the Health and Safety Executive or your local authority.

What do inspectors do?
They visit workplaces to check that the law is being complied with.
Mainly they help you to understand what you need to do. They enforce only
when something is seriously wrong. Their main aim is to help you get it
right.

Do I need to register my business?
Probably, if you employ anyone - contact East Ayrshire Council or
the HSE.

Do I need to have employers liability compulsory insurance?
If you employ anyone, you do - and you should display the certificate.

Do I need to display any posters?
