Arts and Museums Section
MUSEUMS SECTION
Throughout the year at all East Ayrshire Museum sites there
are permanent and temporary displays of our collections, travelling exhibitions
and loans from other establishments. For details of the exhibition

We exist to preserve, research, display and promote the
human, natural and artistic history of the East Ayrshire area. We provide
life long-learning opportunities for all through exhibitions and displays,
talks, visits, publications, community involvement and special events.
Collections
The service holds a wide-ranging collection of objects and
information relating to the history of the south west of Scotland. Subject
areas also include Fine Art, Local History, Human History, Natural Sciences,
Archaeology, Ethnography, Arms and Armour, Early Musical Instruments,
Textiles, items relating to Robert Burns, Numismatics, Ceramics, Photographs,
Books and Documents.

Enquiries Service
A free enquiry service exists to provide information on
the collections of the museums, on items brought in for identification
by the public, or historical information held on the area. (For Family
History enquiries refer to the Libraries and Information Service).
We can only answer enquiries relating to the area or to
collections and information that we hold, although we will help you to
find the best reference sources for more general enquiries.
Please do not bring items into Museums sites without first
making an appointment to see a member of staff.
There may be a small charge for copying of information.

Human History
A large range of items relating to the domestic, industrial,
agricultural, and leisure history of the people of East Ayrshire. Photographs,
books, clocks, spectacles, televisions, miners lamps and more.

Fine Art Collection
A large collection of traditional and contemporary works
relating to the places and people of East Ayrshire, and works produced
and donated by local people. Oils, watercolours, print and etchings and
sculpture are all represented, and important artists such as Lord Leighton,
Alma-Tadema, Turner and Hornel are included.

Natural Sciences
Dinosaurs to Birds, Lions to Butterflies.
Collections of taxidermy, shells and insects from local areas and local
collectors - most around 100 years old. Geological specimens (rocks, minerals
and fossils) from Ayrshire, Scotland and world-wide.

Loan Kits
A selection of loan kits are available to educational establishments
and other suitable venues for display, drawing and teaching purposes.
Kits available to borrow FREE OF CHARGE include Egyptians, Victorian,
Rocks and Fossils, Past Toys, Knights and Castles and World War Two. Display
equipment is also available for community events, school displays, etc.
