Co-ordinated Support Plan
The Education Additional Support for Learning (Scotland) Act places a responsibility on educational authorities to make provision for any young person who may have additional support needs and who subsequently requires additional support in order to overcome barriers to learning.
One element of the legislation requires the authority to consider opening a Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP) when there are other agencies beyond education who have an involvement with the young person and whose input may well be crucial in ensuring that the young person’s barriers to learning are overcome.
Other agencies will commonly include social work and the full range of medical and paramedical support services that can be engaged with the young person, such as speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
A CSP is a legal document that outlines the nature of the support that each agency will put in place to address the young person’s additional support needs. The rationale behind the CSP is that it is essential to ensure that when different agencies are working with a young person and their family, their inputs are fully co-ordinated in order to ensure the best outcome for the young person.
Not every young person with additional support needs will require to have a CSP opened, as there may not be any significant and long-term input from other agencies.
