Wheelie bins

BINS-3-CMS

We promote and encourage all residents to recycle their household waste. To achieve this a number of bins are provided for different types of waste products:

  • household waste bin (green in colour) for all residual waste that cannot be recycled
  • blue bin for the uplift of paper and cardboard
  • brown bin for green garden waste
  • black box for glass and cans
Where bins are not suitable for use, residents are provided with an annual allocation of different coloured sacks which match the wheelie bin provision as detailed above.

All bins/boxes must be presented for collection by 6.30am.

Care should be taken when presenting containers for collection during extreme weather conditions. Where possible:

  • present containers in a sheltered location as near as possible to the pavement - ensuring that containers  are visible to the collection crew
  • when excessive winds are forecast, residents who opt not to present their red box (plastics) for collection may present excess plastic, in a plastic sack/carrier bag alongside their red box at the next scheduled visit
  • similarly cans/aerosols/foil may be presented for collection in a plastic sack/carrier bag alongside the black box. However, glass will only be uplifted in the black box

Excess recyclate can be deposited at the Recycling Centres or your nearest Recycling Point, subject to container provision.

If you are unable to place your bin or box at the kerbside, and there is not an able bodied person residing in the property, then we can offer an assisted collection service - a pull out service. To find out if you qualify, contact us and an officer will assess your eligibility. If approved, your bins/boxes will be allocated a pull out sticker which highlights your inclusion in the scheme.

During 2011 a trial collection system of food waste and household plastics operated to approximately 10,000 households. In addition to the bin provision as detailed above, the trial households also had:

  • red box for household plastics
  • internal food caddy
  • external food waste container

From 1 April 2011, all new houses built in East Ayrshire will incur a charge for the provision of the household waste bin, blue bin, brown bin and black box.
