Food waste bins
A silver bin - intended for internal kitchen use - and a larger green bin - for external use, are to be used for the collection of food waste.
The external green bin is collected every week from the kerbside. Your green bin is locked by securing the handle in the upright position.
A trial kerbside collection of food waste will be running from December 2010 - December 2011 and covers almost 10,000 properties. Phase I launched in December 2010 and covered the Lugton, Dunlop, Fenwick, Stewarton and Kilmaurs areas, with Phase II extending the collection service to parts of Kilmarnock, Gatehead, Knockentiber and Crosshouse which launched in March 2011. Food waste is collected weekly from the kerbside.
In addition to the containers, you will also have received an initial supply of kitchen bin liners. If used at a rate of three per week they should last for one year.
September 2011 liners update:
All residents participating in the food trial can now submit a request for one additional roll of food liners to be delivered. Liners will be made available on an as required basis, whilst current stocks last. No charge will be applied, as available liners were purchased as part of the ongoing trial collection system.
To request your additional roll of liners, contact Cleansing services. Your full postal address is required.
Liners will normally be delivered within 1 week of the request being made, subject to Cleansing Services officers being in your local vicinity during this period.
When your supply runs out you can purchase additional supplies from supermarkets. However, if you do not wish to purchase liners, simply line your containers with newspaper and then fill as normal. Please do not use carrier bags or non-biodegradable plastic bags to collect food waste.
Filled kitchen liners/wrapped food waste from your small silver bin should be transferred to the external green bin, as it is only the green bin which is placed at the kerbside for collection.
