School meals

The Scottish Government recognises the importance of school meals in the health and wellbeing of Scotland’s children.

East Ayrshire Council's catering team, Onsite Services, is committed to providing healthy, nutritious, good value meal options to pupils.

Our school meals menu is operated on a four-weekly rotation which can be viewed at the school meals link on this page.

Price

The current cost of a standard two course school meal is £1.90.

Free school meals

To find out if you qualify for free school meals, please contact the relevant school (during term time) or registration office (during school holidays).

Special dietary requirements

We can cater for special dietary requirements. Please contact the school in the first instance.

Family service

Our Family Service lets children participate in a whole dining experience - from setting the tables, sitting down together to clearing the tables at the end of the meal.  Children are offered a two course meal in an environment that encourages improved eating habits and social skills.  This all takes place in a positive atmosphere supported by teaching and catering staff. It is in fact a ‘Whole School Approach’.

Cashless system

We introduced the cashless system to the campuses of Grange and St Joseph’s in August 2009.

This new system improves aspects of the school meals service within these schools:

  • compliance with the Schools (Health Promotion & Nutritional) Act 2007, by reducing the stigma of free school meals
  • the system is very fast, operators can register more than eight meals per minute, therefore reducing queuing
  • parents can send a cheque to the school office to pay for their child’s meals, which cuts out the need for pupils to carry cash and ensures that dinner money is used for that purpose.  If pupils are carrying cash, it will be less often.
  • alerts can be set which notify catering staff if a pupil accidentally tries to buy unsuitable food – very important in cases of allergies or other dietary conditions
  • reduction in workload for clerical staff and catering staff

The following schools are currently using the cashless system:

  • Auchinleck Academy
  • Doon Academy
  • Grange Campus (includes Grange Academy, Annanhill Primary School and Park Special School)
  • Kilmarnock Academy
  • St Joseph's Campus (includes St Joseph's Academy and St Andrew's Primary School)
