Hungry for success
A whole school approach to school meals
The Scottish Government has introduced Scottish nutrient standards for school lunches. Under the Hungry for Success initiative, children learn the benefits of healthy eating through classroom discussion and by being encouraged to make healthier choices.
Hungry for Success aims to make school meals healthier by:
increasing potatoes, pasta and rice
increasing fruit and vegetables
reducing sugar and salt
using healthy cooking methods
School meals offer nutritionally balanced, well-presented food in an environment that is well ordered and sensitive to the needs of pupils and which improves their lunchtime social experience.
East Ayrshire is currently the only Scottish Council to have achieved 'commended' status for all primary and secondary schools in the Scottish Healthy Choices Award Scheme. Following on this success, Onsite Services has developed and introduced new school lunch menus.
