Additional support needs

A child or young person is said to have additional support needs where, for whatever reason, they need additional support with their education. This applies whether the need for additional support is temporary or ongoing.

Additional support simply means some kind of educational provision that is over and above (or significantly different from) the education normally provided to pupils of the same age in local mainstream schools.

Additional support is provided in order that children or young people with additional support needs can benefit from an education which is "directed to the development of the personality, talents and mental and physical abilities of that child or young person to their fullest potential."

The range of difficulties could include:

  • severe and complex learning difficulties
  • specific learning difficulties
  • sensory and physical impairment
  • communication difficulties
  • social and emotional difficulties
  • exceptional children
