Promoting inclusion
Every child is entitled by law to a mainstream school-based education, if their parents wish. Our schools, educational and other services must offer a quality provision to all children irrespective of where they live, their background or disabilities. It is our task to develop young people's abilities to their fullest potential.
We believe that the hallmark of a true education lies in quality provision for all. We are in constant discussion with parents and parent councils as well as young people, through pupil councils and the Young Person’s forum. The lifelong learning spokespersons meet with groups of young people each year.
As a joint department of Educational and Social Services, we are best placed to ensure that families can benefit from well-co-ordinated professional support. Through these commitments, we aim to develop the best services for the community and for individual children and young people.
Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC)
The vision is for all Scottish children and young people to be:
-
safe
-
healthy
-
achieving
-
nurtured
-
active
-
respected
-
responsible
-
included
As part of the implementation of Getting it Right for Every Child, a training programme for the introduction of the Integrated Assessment Framework (IAF) began in November 2009. In September 2010, the final phase was concluded, bringing about the full implementation of the IAF.
The framework is based on health, education, social services, support agencies and voluntary organisations working together with a shared responsibility to implement a fully co-ordinated and systematic approach to the gathering, recording and evaluation of information in relation young people in need, or at risk of harm. It is based on the Scottish Government’s vision for all Scottish young people and is seen as one of the main building blocks of Getting it Right for Every Child.
