Busy bee teacher up for education award

12 Mar 2012 13:01:39

A popular local teacher has been put forward for Teacher of the Year in the Scottish Education Awards for her ‘sparkle’, ‘passion for her school’– and willingness even to dress as a bumble bee when required!.

Primary 1 pupils at Silverwood love teacher Mary McCluskie, who has taught generations of children over her 19 years at the Kilmarnock primary.

Headteacher Diane Wright, who nominated her, said: “Mary’s bright, cheery personality makes her class a hive of activity where learning is fun. Her children skip in and out of school!

“Mary is so enthusiastic and always positive in her support for school events whether it is the Christmas Fayre, Daffodil Tea or anniversary celebrations. She has even been known to appear as a bumble bee or fairy, which again displays her commitment and sense of fun!”

Mary knows all the families in the area well and is always willing to help parents with any concerns. She makes herself available before or after school or will phone families if she feels it will be helpful. Over the years, Mary has taught different generations at Silverwood. Mums and dads are often delighted when they realize Mrs McCluskie is their child’s teacher.

Mary is always eager to take advantage of new technology and her hi-tech promethean board is well used in the Primary 1 classroom.

Diane Wright added: “People value Mary’s knowledge, experience and personal warmth. She is always willing to share her ideas and is a great resource to have.

“She has a passion for her class and our school and is always keen to develop each and every child to their fullest potential.

“Mary qualified in 1975 and has lost none of her sparkle. She inspires and encourages everyone at Silverwood. I’ve nominated Mary for the award as an outstanding professional who deserves recognition for the brilliant job she does”.
