Modern apprenticeship event comes to Grand Hall

09 May 2012 11:10:17

For many people aged 16-24 Modern Apprenticeships offer a great way to gain skills, qualifications and a real job with future prospects. East Ayrshire Council’s Skills Development and Employability Service has helped many local businesses to take on and train their future employees this way  – and now it is opening its own doors to provide a record 47 opportunities within the Council’s own departments.

On Thursday 24 May a team of recruiters will host a Modern Apprenticeship Information event from 3.00 – 7.00pm in the Grand Hall Kilmarnock. They’ll be looking for candidates to fill posts in a range of areas from construction to business administration, roads, horticulture and social care all of which will be on offer in the coming months.

Sarah Parker, Skills Development Team Leader, East Ayrshire Council said: “We regularly run recruitment fairs for companies  – the last one we held attracted 120 young people and  resulted in 15 placements being offered in four local textile companies. All the others who attended were offered help and alternatives and many of them have also gained employment as a result.

“This recruitment fair is exciting for us since we are looking for young people to join our own organisation. We are delighted to have so many MAs on offer.  Everyone who comes along will be given a chance to register with our service and find opportunities to suit them. There is no need to pre book and we hope that this event will make a real difference to the lives of those who come along.”

The level 2 and 3 Modern Apprenticeships vary in length from one to four years depending on the chosen specialty. Successful applicants are paid, gain SVQ qualifications, college placements, on the job training and experience. On completion of the MA the prospects for permanent are excellent. For five people it will offer a great second chance, with places available in construction trades for redundant apprentices who have already completed one or two years of a MA.

Staff from all the departments involved will be on hand to discuss the opportunities, while existing MA trainees will also be available to give a first hand account of their experiences with the  East Ayrshire Council training scheme. Representatives from all the local colleges, Skills Development Scotland and Job Centre Plus will also be there to give career advice and guidance.
