Cycling, food tasting, talent shows and a gypsy traveller awareness session are just some of the events taking place across East Ayrshire from 3-10 March as part of East Ayrshire Equality Week.
The week aims to raise awareness of equality and diversity issues within East Ayrshire and all of the events, some of which have been organised by the Council and Community Planning partners and others by national agencies and community groups, are free to attend.
A ‘Cycling for All’ event will kick start the week on Saturday 3 March at St Joseph’s Academy in Kilmarnock from 9.30am to 12.30pm. This will give people the opportunity to take part in a leisurely 6 mile cycle, or more enthusiastic cyclists can enjoy a longer 12 mile journey. There will also be a Fun Skills course which is suitable for all the family.
Rounding off the week’s events on Saturday 10 March will be a Multi-Cultural event, again at St Joseph’s, where communities can come together to celebrate the diversity that exists within East Ayrshire. From 10.30am to 2.00pm there’ll be live entertainment, food tasting from around the world, sporting events, information stalls, henna painting, card making and even a crèche for the little ones.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Spokesperson for Equalities within the Council, said: “The Council and its partners, including NHS Ayrshire and Arran, Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, place equality at the heart of everything we do and are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity and social inclusion. The week really does contain something for everyone, from ‘Dads in Play’ events which will encourage dads and their children to experience interactive activities, to sign language and family history workshops, Bookbug sessions for children and Adult Disability Sports Club events.
“I would encourage anyone who lives in East Ayrshire to log on to http://bookings.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/equalityweek2012 to book a place at an event or call Alyia Zaheed, Equality and Diversity Officer on 01563 576244 for more information.”
The Council is grateful for the funding which has been provided through the Awards for All grant programme which has helped greatly with the organisation of Equality Week.
