School of Rugby scores a try for healthy eating

02 May 2012 15:41:43

Glasgow Warriors front row players Pat MacArthur and Gordon Reid recently visited Grange Academy to promote healthy eating as part of the School of Rugby programme.

A highlight of the visit was the ‘wrap challenge’ where players and pupils were challenged to see how much they knew about healthy options as they made tortilla wraps with the range of ingredients on offer.

The Cashback for Communities-funded rugby programme aims to create an environment where sport plays a central role in the life of the school.

The initiative includes rugby teams of all ages, opportunities for the development of girls’ teams and non-playing opportunities for senior pupils in coaching, refereeing, volunteering and running sport in local primary schools.

Scottish Rugby sponsors Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) have developed a healthy eating programme in association with the School of Rugby.

Grange Academy Headteacher Fred Wildridge said: “I am genuinely pleased that the School of Rugby has proved to be such a success, with the number of pupils involved increasing year on year.

“Participation is the key to sporting success and the School of Rugby has done much to increase participation levels.

“Working in partnership with the Scottish Rugby Union, I look forward to seeing this developing further and continuing to benefit the young people of Grange Academy.”

Scottish Rugby’s Head of Community Rugby, Colin Thomson, said: “Through the School of Rugby, we aim to develop youngsters into confident, competent individuals, showing the positive impact sport has on them and their school communities”.

Jennifer Robertson, QMS Health and Education Co-ordinator, said: “When the Glasgow Warriors visited the school, pupils had the opportunity to ask them about their diets, the part meat plays in meal plans and the nutritional benefits it provides”.
