Adistars in their eyes!

Sporting youngsters from schools across East Ayrshire took time out of lessons to join the adiStars Conference at Kilmarnock College Centre of Sporting Excellence last week.

Senior pupils enjoyed an opening ceremony with a motivational Olympic Games DVD and presentations from Platinum Young Ambassadors Jenna Holland and Robert Shaw of Auchinleck Academy.

World curling triple gold champion Ewan MacDonald dropped in to meet and chat to the youngsters, who also competed in a quiz organised by Gold Young Ambassadors JJ Hawkshaw and Hannah Wales of Grange Academy.

The budding young athletes also had the opportunity to put questions to a sports panel featuring Team GB Olympic hammer thrower Shirley Addison – also known as Battleaxe from TV’s Gladiators – and local sportsman Michael McRoberts, who regularly competes at major taekwondo championships home and abroad.

AdiStars is a programme led by Active Schools, sportscotland and the Youth Sport Trust, sponsored by Adidas. East Ayrshire is one of just 10 local authorities in Scotland selected to run this programme, based on last year’s success of the Young Ambassadors. All Young Ambassadors are now known as adiStars.

Councillor Hugh Ross, Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, said: “I’m delighted that we have such an enthusiastic group of ambassadors in all nine of our secondary schools, keen to promote sporting activities to other youngsters.

“The adiStars conference was excellent, inspiring the young people by giving them the opportunity to meet professional athletes at the top of their game”.
