Regeneration
East Ayrshire's local economy has changed significantly over the years. The emphasis has moved away from traditional industries such as coal mining and textiles, to a broader business base embracing opportunities presented by the growth of the service sector.
This progress has presented a challenge at the local level, as many communities, particularly in the southern part of the area, have suffered with the decline of traditional industries. More recently, the impact of the global economic crisis has brought additional challenges. As a result there has never been a more important time to focus on the sustainable regeneration of East Ayrshire's communities.
Delivering community regeneration requires a complex and integrated approach, taking into account physical, social and economic factors. We have concentrated on definable actions, which can and will make a measurable difference to East Ayrshire and its residents.
Different aspects of community regeneration are dealt with in a series of action plans. Social regeneration is dealt with in thematic action plans and financial inclusion is dealt with through the community plan's "Improving Health and Wellbeing Action Plan", which recognises the impact of debt and low income on physical and mental health.
Through our "Delivering Community Regeneration" action plan, we aim to:
• regenerate our town centres and villages, and improve run down areas
• grow and support new and existing businesses
• develop employability initiatives
• grow tourism and increase visits and participation in cultural leisure activities
• promote transport solutions for East Ayrshire, particularly in rural areas, ensuring good quality affordable choices
• support the provision of sustainable housing
• protect, conserve and enhance the natural environment
• mitigate against and adapt to the negative effects of climate change
• support parents and carers, communities, service providers and agencies to break intergenerational cycles of poverty and inequality
