Naming ceremonies

A naming ceremony is a very special way of celebrating the birth of your child as well as welcoming the new arrival into the family and the wider community. It is also an opportunity to declare, before family and friends, your promise to be as good a parent as you can and for adult friends or relatives to confirm their special relationship with your child. It's a unique occasion for everyone to feel involved as they pledge their love and support for your child's future development.

The ceremony has six essential sections:

  • Introduction and welcome
  • Short reading
  • Formal naming of the child(ren)
  • Parent's promises
  • Promises by supporting adults
  • Closing words

There are many ways to make your child's ceremony a very personal and unique event.

The ceremony has no legal status and is simply something that parents choose to do as a public gesture of love and commitment to their child. Unlike a birth certificate which is a compulsory legal document, the record of the ceremony cannot be used as proof of identification. The ceremony is not legally binding on those who take part in it.

The ceremony usually lasts about 15 minutes, but can be up to 30 minutes if more readings and other options are included, and can take place in any registration office or at any of our approved venues.

The fee for the ceremony depends on the day and place of the ceremony. An initial non-returnable deposit of £55 is required to make a booking, which will be deducted from the total cost of the ceremony.

Please contact the Burns Monument Centre for further information or to make a booking. All registration offices in East Ayrshire operate an appointment system.
