School libraries

School libraries provide a range of information and advice to their users:

  • to support the delivery of the curriculum
  • to support pupils’ personal reading
  • to support literacy across the curriculum
  • to support information skills and lifelong learning
  • to support pupils’ career and post-school choices
  • to support staff professional development

School libraries in East Ayrshire provide a programme of author events each year, under the banner of Spring Read Book Festival. This festival is organised jointly by the school librarians of each secondary school, with support from East Ayrshire Libraries and Live Literature Scotland funding.

Each secondary school hosts at least one visit by a well-known author, and invites pupils from nearby schools to attend. Interested pupils therefore get the opportunity to see a range of respected authors in various venues. The festival encourages inter-school visits and this collaboration is highlighted by the festival’s presence on Glow, Scotland’s education intranet.
